Department Profile

Welcome to the Department of Physics!

The Department of Physics at Arignar Anna Govt. Arts & Science College, Karaikal has maintained a strong commitment to undergraduate (B.Sc Physics) teaching since its formation in 1978. Students are admitted based on HSC performance, adhering to Government reservation policies. Most of the students admitted are first-generation learners from schools where the medium of instruction is Tamil. Every year, a majority of our passed students join professional and postgraduate level courses. Alumni of this department are well-positioned in various fields such as Engineering, Medicine, Research, Telecommunications, and IT.

Laboratory Facilities

The Department has three spacious laboratories—General Lab, Optics Lab, and Electronics Lab—equipped with advanced instruments for conducting UG & PG level experiments. The following facilities are available within the labs:

  • Supporting staff, including lab attenders and MTS, are available.
  • Well-furnished experimental tables with proper electrification and ample wooden seating for students.
  • An on-site Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purifier with a 12-litre capacity.

Classrooms & Faculty Room

The Department has three dedicated classrooms for all years of UG students. We have one staff room that has sufficient infrastructure, space, and seating capacity for all faculty members. The faculty room also includes attached restroom and bathroom facilities.

Computer & Audio-Visual Facilities

The Department utilizes modern computer and audio-visual equipment to conduct classes and special programs:

  • Interactive Panels: Two panels are available to conduct department functions, seminars, presentations, and meetings.
  • LCD Projector: Available with a screen for use by students and staff.
  • Desktop Computers: Used to teach and demonstrate programming languages and numerical techniques as available in the curriculum.

Department Library

Since 2016, the Department has maintained a separate, dedicated library facility for students. It houses nearly 650 UG & PG level physics books covering different topics, various authors, and new editions. Students can easily access these books during college hours with the assistance of department staff.
