Department Profile

Arignar Anna Govt. Arts & Science College, Karaikal was started by the Government of Puducherry on 14th July 1967. Karaikal had been the most backward rural area in eastern coast of Tamilnadu and one of the districts in Puducherry (UT) predominantly inhibited by fishermen and other economically backward class people. The chemistry department of this college is a prestigious one, started by the first principal of this college, Prof. V.K. Gopalan, a chemistry professor, in the year 1968. Thus the very first graduate course in chemistry in the entire Pondicherry Union Territory was started in this college.

Since then, the department has produced many graduates in chemistry who got employed in various departments in the government service and also in industries and schools, both in private and government organizations. Many have continued their higher studies and got employed in colleges and research institutes both in India and abroad.

At present, the department is well equipped with three sophisticated labs (one for main students and another for allied students and one instrumentation lab) and all modern facilities like computers, smart class room, Projector, R.O water purifier, etc. The M.Sc. Chemistry Course was started in the academic year 2017-18. The Chemistry Department has considered the highest value in the college and is fully loaded with all required chemicals, apparatus and instruments for both B.Sc. (Main & Allied) and M.Sc - Chemistry course.

Tutorial classes are conducted for our department students. They are encouraged to come out with their problems/difficulties they face in their studies, living condition in college and at home and other personal problems which they consider as hurdle to their academic performance. For such students, proper guidance and counseling are provided and properly motivated to get them improved in their studies.
